fuzzi's Chicken Journal

Such sweet babies!

Glad to hear you found her eating and doing a little better. This is hopeful!
Sometimes one that is a little runty at first can definitely catch up.

LOL Oh my, the mess they can make. Water stations filled with debris. Good idea to place them higher, but I bet they still get filled up. 😂
I recall the mess made by the first two broods, last year. If I were able to check during the day it wouldn't concern me.

Little Chick appears to be doing better!!!
🥳🥳🥳

She's not crying much, just some peeping when she wants Momma Martha. I tried to give her vitamin E and B this afternoon, but she fought hard, so I put her down.

All the chicks have been drinking the vitamin/electrolytes water.

Martha found a way to frustrate Samuel's lust.

Little Chick ("LC") between her hatchmate (green anklet) and black chick:

You can see her scabbed-over head wound, to the right of her eye.

Checking out the chicks' nursery...

Martha lets Tamar know that she's too close!
Wow, Martha's feisty!

I'm very encouraged.

Dontcha know it! 🤣
Even if you are home and can check regularly, they still muck it up.

GO Martha!! She's a great Mama.
LC is looking better! The others look good too. I'm glad things are going well.

When I got home from work I cut up grapes, scrambled some eggs, grabbed a bottle of electrolytes, and headed for the coop.

I put the grapes and some eggs on the feeding trays, riot ensued!

While the adults were occupied I partially opened the broody area and scattered the rest of the scrambled eggs inside. I heard Martha's reaction, encouraging her chicks to eat this marvelous food. The rest of the flock heard Martha's food call and stampeded over, but couldn't get past the barrier. Argh!

"Little chicks, little chicks, let me in!"

"Not by a hair of our chiny-chin-chin!"

Then the chicks came out to scratch and play.

And Martha had another bath:

After about 20 minutes the chicks went back to the brooder for more food and drink, and then returned to the run...except LC, who took a nap.

I was so pleased, because LC had been keeping up with the others, and NOT crying, and just needed a little rest, and did so without trying to get underneath Momma Martha!

Within about 5 minutes LC woke up, cried briefly "Where did everyone go?!?" but figured it out by herself.

After about 90 minutes Martha led the chicks into the brooder and got everyone settled around her in the box.

Goodnight, sweet chicks...

Home today, working in the yard, so I gave Martha and the chicks a little freedom. She is doing such a good job of protecting them.

When LC can't find Martha and starts crying, Martha calls, but then walks to where LC can see her, and run to her. It's sweet to watch.

Today Martha introduced her chicks to the joy of yard clippings!
