Cinders turned in an uneasy tight circle. Tossing her head, she loosed another frightened whinny.

Dusky saw the shadow of another wolf appear to her left. Veering, she headed out across the open plains. Black Ice kicked at a wolf, that was leaping at her flanks. Ash, suffering from colic, brought up the rear, whinnying in terror. A sick horse was always the once picked off.
