There is much confusion when it comes to distinguishing Green Peafowl from Spaldings here are some tips and tricks to telling the two apart.
- Green peafowl do not come in any of the colors or patterns that there IB cousins do. If someone is claiming to have "Purple Javas" or "Pied Javas" they are Spaldings not true Greens
- The crest of a Green bird is tightly bunched and erect. There should be no fan shape to the crest whatsoever
- If a breeder consistently refers to their birds as "Javas" rather than the designated subspecies it might be wise to not purchase from them.
- The neck feathers should be scaled and not ribbed like the India Blues. This is a major giveaway on most Spalding Birds.
- The face of the bird should have yellow loral patches and should be triangular and narrowed rather than rounded and white like an IB bird's.
- There should be no bright blue in the neck feathers.
- No true breeder of Greens will ever sell hatching eggs.
- Greens have much longer legs than their Blue cousins.
- Java Spalding, Green Spalding, Spalding, High percentage Spalding, Emerald Spalding, and Peridot Spalding are all hybrid birds and should never be sold as true Greens
- If a breeder cannot prove what line their birds came out of they should be treated as Spaldings. There is a difference between a bird that IS pure rather than one that just LOOKS pure.
