Hi everyone! My name is Tavros ^_^ I currently own 4 hens and 3 silkie chicks (whom are in the brooder) and I figured I'd introduce myself. I live in Oklahoma and we're currently working on weatherproofing our coop to protect our girls, does anyone have any advice? We've got some heating pads and we're planning to put tarps up over their run.

Welcome from snowy Iowa! I used inexpensive clear shower curtains from Walmart, to get the ladies out of the wind. We don’t have heat in the coop, after all they have a down coat on. Enjoy your time here!

Hi @tuna2dope

I installed solar panels and heat bulb when I built my coop. But my chickens never needed it, so I since disconnected it. Just make sure there are no drafts and the chickens should do fine heating themselves.

For the record, my area averages temperatures in the 20s Fahrenheit during January and February.

Hiya, and welcome to BYC!!

We're in WI so our coop is insulated already but for the grow-out temp coop, we bought a 14 mil (heavy duty) greenhouse tarp. Those have UV protection so they last longer and let light through but watch for ones with grommets or tie-downs as they are slightly different than reg tarps.
