from WI. This is my first year with chickens and I had the same questions.....I got breeds that are supposed to do well in cold weather. I am planning on letting them run loose in the yard in the winter if they want to. I will also keep the run covered and for the winter close up 3 sides so at least they are protected from wind and stay (hopefully) dry.....Depending on breed and abilit to provide windproof dry shelter I would hope that the chickens would be fine. Frostbite is a concern for chickens with large combs/wattles

They also look like some ISA Browns I saw pictures of.

The girl told me that the solid colored ones would be roosters and the striped ones would be females. We thought we got a rooster and 5 hens but it doesn't appear to be true. They are all hens. Although I only have 5 that are laying eggs. One appears to be slightly behind in her maturation. He comb is way smaller and is very light pink instead of red like the others.
