I have a duck who is sitting on some chicken eggs. One of them pipped today, so I have been checking on them periodically. I went out a bit ago and found one of the eggs (not the one that had pipped) with the outer membrane open and with a lot of shell missing. I think maybe the duck stepped on it and broke the shell? There was some blood in the nest, but it doesn't look like the inner membrane was too severely punctured. I can't tell if the chick is still alive or not, but I can see that it hasn't yet absorbed the yolk. It could be anywhere from 19-21 days developed. I put it in a box with a heat lamp and covered the egg with a damp paper towel. Is there anything else I can do or is there any way for me to tell if the chick is even alive? Here's a pic.
