My three year old RIR is acting lethargic and her tail is dropping and hanging low. She went under the coop tonight instead of roosting in it. I've noticed runny poop with what looked like egg yolk in it. Her vent feathers had some yolk on them. Any suggestions on what I can and should do for her?

Will Duramycin 10 help?

I am searching the forums for the same issue today, and I've found several threads that have lots of information on what to do for a hen with a broken egg inside her.

There's some info in this thread:

And quite a lot in this one:

Hope your lady improves. I do have mine on tetracycline hydrochloride because it's the only antibiotic I have on hand, and I read that it can help fight both gram positive and gram negative bacteria. I figure it's worth a try. (Baytril is often recommended, and injectable penicillin if you've got access to it. I do not. So... : ) My hen isn't sick, but laid just egg white and yolk yesterday, so I'm treating her to help her avoid complications. She's had a few sitz baths already, which is highly recommended to help remove egg particles that may still be inside and help the hen recover. That would likely be a good first step, by the way. Warm bath temperature water to soak that area for twenty minutes, then hopefully her muscles will be relaxed enough to expel more egg matter and get cleaned out. (I put my lady in a large tub on the front porch and she stayed quite well. No egg stuff yet, though.)

Since your hen is behaving like she's ill, from what I've read it would be a good idea to start her on antibiotics right away. Hopefully someone with firsthand knowledge treating this can respond. : ) Hope it goes well.

Thank you so much. I figured out the dosage for a pint of water. Then gave her four large droppers full. I separated her in her own area. Tomorrow I will give her more medicated water if I don't see her drinking herself. I also have her Vitamin D and grinded vitamin C over her food. I did a vent sweep and smelly yellow fluid came out. Tomorrow night I will do a Epson salt bath. I hope this works. Good luck and thank you.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your girl.
