I have a one year old olive egger. I just noticed today that she is sick. When I went out to give them treats she did not want to eat any treats. She just stood there which is very abnormal for her. Her right eye is closed and has some discharge coming from nostril. She is not eating or drinking at this time. Does anyone have any tips?

Welcome to BYC. Is her right eyelid swollen or have any bubbles, or dry crust in it? Can you flush it with saline and apply either Terramycin eye ointment from the feed store, or plain Neosporin twice a day? She might have been pecked in the eye, but this can also be a sign of a respiratory disease. mG is a common one. If you can get Tylosin powder for her water, you can use that to treat for possible MG. Here is where to find that online, or you can get it from your vet:

Dosage is 1 tsp per gallon for 5 days. Add the powder to the water to mix it properly.

Have you added any new birds to your flock recently?

We cleaned around the eye and put neosporin on eye lid. While cleaning and putting pressure around her face there was some snot coming out of her nose when we pressed. She hasn’t ate or drank today. We tried to get her to drink to no avail. We ordered denagard and should be here tomorrow. Do you think denagard will help? We added some last weekend but they have been separated by fence. Not sure of the distance they need to be kept apart when first introducing the chickens.

Is the sick chicken part of the newly added group? Denagard is a treatment for MG, a chronic respiratory disease. Do you notice a bad odor from the beak? MG can look like coryza, but coryza symptoms are worse and may cause a bad odor. Either disease can make carriers of the whole flock. Separate the new ones far away from the others or return them. Here is apsome info on Denagard dosage:

No the sick hen is from our original group. We have 5 originals and we just got 5x 20 week old hens. We only have one right now that is effected. There is not a bad smell from the beak.

Keep the new ones quarantined for a month. Try to get the sick chicken tested through your state vet lab or a national lab Zoologix in California. Some cull sick birds, to not spread a disease, but I would try to find out what disease it may be. Many of the respiratory diseases can make carriers of your flock, and then you would need to close the flock permanently.
