Hoping someone can help me. My 7 1/2 year old buff Orpington is having difficulty eating and drinking, and the concern is becoming real. It started late April, following winter in Minnesota, I thought she had a dirty beak. Snow had just melted, everything kind of muddy. After several weeks it was clear that it was not mud, rather blood. And there looked to be a little hole in her lower beak. She was behaving normally at this time. About three weeks ago, some days, her beak looking better than others, her face swelled up, and her eye closed. Unsure whether she was hurt or if it’s some thing else, we started putting Neosporin on her beak, saline drops in her eyes, ibuprofen for the pain & swelling, and children’s Benadryl as recommended by an online vet. After a week or so, the little hole in her lower beak seemed to heal, but no real change in her face. We began to suspect that it was not an injury, but possibly respiratory disease, and put her on Amtyl 500, which is amoxicillin and Tylosin pill. We manually inserted pill for five days, and manually fed and watered her. Now it has been three days since her last pill, and still is not eating except what we give her manually. It seems as if her lower beak isn’t working properly and with one eye working she doesn’t seem to be able to get the food in her mouth despite her efforts. She now also appears agitated when we pick her up… she’s probably tired of my husbands fingers in her mouth, poor girl. Please does anyone have any ideas? @Eggcessive, you have helped me in the past many times, any thoughts? She is the sweetest little Buffy, we call her Ginger <3 it’s finally her turn to be at the top of the pecking order!

I will try to get a photo of the inside of her beak, but no, there are no odors, and feeling like the swelling is originating from the base of her lower beak. Similarly, no discharge from the eyes or nose, breathing seems normal. I’ll be back with photos shortly!

Sorry about your hen. The pictures may help. Could another hen, rooster, or predator have injured her beak and face?Is there anything around the coop where she could have punctured her lower beak back in April, or injured her beak more recently? Maybe a pecking order problem and wire fencing, or something sharp sticking out of a board? I would mix some watery chicken feed, a bit of scrambled egg, and switch around later with some tuna or small bits of canned cat food. Offer it in a small bowl up to her beak, and at least twice a day, try to get her eating and drinking. Leave her usual feed in a tall sided bowl to make it easier to eat. Beak injuries are very painful at first. Does she have any bubbles, foam
, or white gunk inside the closed eye?

Thank you, both for the feedback, I am attaching a few pictures from today I could get! It is possible that it was an injury in April, Ginger was the lowest on the pecking order. However, in the last three weeks, she has been separated, while giving these treatments. There is nothing sure in the coop or the run. Because we haven’t seen progress or much progress, we feel an injury would have started to look much better by now. There doesn’t appear to be any thing in her eye, it appears to be clear. Her tongue looks normal. The issue seems to be in her lower beak and she get crusty where it needs , her face on one side. We are headed to the farm store now for a feeding tube to hopefully buy us some time and get her strong again. Hopefully these pictures give some insight! Thank you!

Cancer wasn’t even on our mind! We tube fed directly into her crop yesterday and today, and have just been spending time with her. I guess we’ll just take her lead. Would you recommend continuing to give her ibuprofen for pain and swelling to keep her comfortable? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all for your time <3 for my sweet girl!!!
