hi there -
I just recently noticed we have mites - I freaked out of course bc I don't need this affecting my flock! So I researched and I found a few natural recipes to use on both my chickens and my coop
http://www.fresheggsdaily.com/2013/02/mites-how-to-prevent-them-and-treat.html?m=1

I did both two days ago (Thursday) and I'm still finding mites.

My problem is that my silkie is currently hatching babies. Everyday there's a new little guy or gal and i don't want the mites to hurt them!

What can I do? I'm in Canada, so buying some ingredients proves difficult or too expensive. Any guidance is appreciated!

I'm sorry you're having trouble.

I'm all for finding natural alternatives for preventing/treating chickens, but it seems that what you found is not effective. If you have an active infestation you will most likely need to treat with a Permethrin based poultry spray or dust.

Since you are in Canada, you may need to look for Sevin or use Carbyl. Let me see if @Wickedchicken6 is around, she may have a better idea of what is available to use.

Good morning! :frow

Are you in the western Canada or Eastern Canada?

We have Carbaryl in Canada. It's a powder and it's labelled for poultry. I've had really fantastic results using it so far. I treated the flock in June. At that time they had mites. Haven't had to treat since. It can be found in most feeds strores, co-ops, Peavey Marts in the west and TSCs in the east. It is approximately $19-$23 depending on where you buy it.

I just treated the young chickens and guineas 3 nights ago. They showed no signs of parasites and the main flock showed no signs of mites.

There is also Ectiban. This is a permethrin based concentrate liquid you can mix to spray your birds and your coop. It is labeled for poultry. It's considerably more expensive initially...but it would be cheaper in the long run. It seems to me it's in the $40 -$60 range. If you only have a few birds...the poultry powder may be your best choice. Here's a link to the information about it.

If you have any questions at all; about these products or other concerns, please don't hesitate to ask. :)

You both are fantastic! Thank you!

We are in a small town 1 hour east from Ottawa. The TSC out here doesn't have anything to help in stock.

I'll probably get both - we have a flock of 18 but 4 babies just hatched so it's growing considerably fast. And we can't re-home any of the babies if they have mites!

Thx for the links - ordering now!!

Just to let you know...one canister of the poultry dust will treat approximately 60 or so chickens. You have to be careful and use a mask when dusting as well. It's very fine dust.

Your TSC doesn't have anything for stock? Wow...they used have quite a bit for stock out here. I hope your items are around the same price range. The traps I order here are twice the price at TSC.
