We got our first egg today (yay!) from Lala, one of our RIR hens (she's about 21 weeks old). Chester, the other hen (yes, she's female), seems to be about a week younger than Lala and hasn't laid an egg yet. The strange thing is when Lala was laying her egg, she was making a lot of noise, so I went out to see what the commotion was about. When I approached the cage where she was laying, Chester came running from across the yard and attacked my feet! They periodically will peck us when they think we have food for them, but this was a full on attack. She was pecking at my feet, and chased me away from the cage!
It seemed as if she was protecting Lala while she was laying her egg. She didn't care if I went to the other side of the yard, and when Lala was done and came out of the cage, she stopped trying to attack me.
Has anyone heard of anything like this before?
