Our Lady had symptoms of being egg bound. We soaked her and rubbed her belly etc. I used my finger to help and look for an egg. No success. It is night now and she is sleeping in our bathroom. Stuff has been coming from her vent. I really can not afford to take her to the vet. What could it be?

Sorry to hear you lost your hen.
The only way to find out why she died is to have a necropsy done, or if you can't afford one, it is possible to do one yourself and perhaps get some idea of what went wrong. I know the idea of cutting open a pet can be unpleasant or daunting, but it might save the life of one of your other hens by gaining knowledge.

I've done a few now and figured out the cause in most cases. You learn more with each one you do.

It sounds like she may have had an infection as a result of a broken egg or internal laying.

Best wishes

Barbara
