Hen or Rooster

Most cockerels are bright red in the combs by 10 weeks old. Pullets, regardless of breed, don't start to pink up in the comb until they are close to laying age. For barred/cuckoo breeds, they can be sexed by color. Cockerels have two copies of the barring gene making them have twice as much white barring as hens. Also, by 12 weeks old, male feathering begins to become visible.
