My name is Mel and I'll be buying chickens for the first time in spring 2016. In the process my husband and I are building our own coop out of complete upcycled materials.

Nice to meet you Mel, Welcome to Backyard chickens. It would be great if you documented your coop build with photos - to become your coop build page. You may like to check out the coops section for ideas etc. Many people build with what they have on hand, wooden pallets are a treasured source, large wooden shipping crates for major appliances, old sheds, dog houses , kids play houses etc.
