Hello everyone! I am very new to the chicken world...We are planning on getting our first flock this spring! I live in rural missouri, I'm a stay at home mommy to two littles, and #3 due in June. I'm in the research stage right now, so any advice would be helpful!! :) I'm looking for a flock of about 10-12 chickens that will be prolific egg layers, will tolerate the hot/cold seasons of Missouri, and will be friendly with my kids. I'm excited to learn and happy to be here!

As far as breeds go, I would recommend Buff orpingtons, black australorps, barred rocks, wyandotte, sussex, cochins and sex links. Buff orpingtons are my favorite breed. They are affectionate and great with kids. They are great layers and cold hardy. Black australorps are a lot like Buff orps. Barred rock and sussex chickens are very curious, docile and good layers. Wyandotte and sex links are excellent layers but have a higher tendency to be aggressive. Cochins are more of a pet and not the best layers.

I'm glad you joined the BYC "flock".

Mountain Peeps has given you a good list with some nice breeds. The breed that I would recommend would be the Wyandotte. Mine have been quite hardy through -20 degree weather all the way up to 104 degrees. They have been excellent layers of 250+ eggs per year, and have been great pets. My Wyandottes have the best temperaments of all my birds and are thoroughly entertaining, docile, gentle, inquisitive, and personable. They can be great for kids because of their fluffy, cute appearance and good temperament. In my experience, Wyandottes are not mean birds. My two largefowl Wyandottes have done fine in a mixed flock with no aggression problems. They are dominant, but I haven't found them to be particulary standoffish and they have not ripped feathers out of other birds, nor injured other birds. I would definitely recommend them.

Good luck with your future flock!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to our flock. The other members have given you some good recommendations. If "prolific" egg production is a primary goal, I would recommend Black Sex Links (Black Stars), which are hardy and friendly, egg laying machines. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year. They're readily available from lots of hatcheries and should have no problem handling your Missouri summers and winters. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breed or hybrid you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

Hello from Oregon & welcome to BYC - Be sure to check out the learning tabs on this site. Leghorns & sexlinks are great egg producers. Best of luck :)
