We got an infestation of fleas in my coup, I was thinking of using sevin dust in the coop and in the 4 month old chicks but there are babies just hatching since yesterday:) and I'm afraid it could harm them. And what for the quails? Any ideas?

There are some threads here on lice. Guessing that's what the 'fleas' are...

Chicken fleas are not at all the same as lice or mites, but can be treated about the same as Red Mites. Basically it's a combination of Malathion spray, Malathion bath and Sevin dust. Really kinda complicated and a serious issue if your chickens have them. I recommend you Google "chicken fleas" and especially read the SUITE101.COM article about chicken infestations and treatments. I'm dealing with the same problem as we speak on my chickens and turkeys. Good Luck and keep us posted on your results.

I too have developed a recent problem with this pesky pest. I'm gonna try the suite 101 tips with the olive oil .... I'll keep posted whether or not that worked.

I didn't know chickens could get flees.

I wonder if there those tiny snow flees? I see them all over the melting snow in the winter. They eat algae!

DE should deal with this problem as it will kill all pests.

Just dust your girls with it and after cleaning the coup and possibly disinfecting and treating it put down some DE powder along with your wood shavings or whatever you use to cover the floor or in nest boxes.

Ohh I forgot you can also dust yoru run with it and it should deal with any problems you have there.

DE is Diatomaceous Earth. Hang on I will check the spelling just to make sure. Yep that is right, it is totally natural and will work on internal and external parasites in poultry and other animals.

I believe "snow fleas" are actually collembola or springtails and not a flea, mite, tick or anything like that.
