How old does a roo have to be to have spurs?

I cannot tell the difference between the hens and the roosters. All of my chickens are mutt chickens! When do the spurs show up? Do they get spurs first or crow first?

I wish I knew more about these chickens!

Well, if they were a specific breed, and not mixed, you could probably guess based on breeder experiences. But with mixed breeds, it's anyone's guess....

Spurs dont really start coming out till about eight months old, in my experience.

I have read 8 months or so, too. Our Araucana roo started crowing @ 10 weeks, no spurs.

Spurs grow at approx a half inch to an inch per year. They are pretty unnoticeable until closer to the first year of age.

I have a 25 week Mottled Houdan who has a crazy loud crow and spurs to go with it!
