Hi there

Just wanted to say hello!

I am new to backyard chickens but hope to get a lot of information from this website. We just purchased a property of about 1/2 acre and I finally get to have my chickens.

I am looking for layers as I love my eggs, but also friendly chickens that can happily roam around and be happy chooks.

So I guess my question is what breeds are recommended?

Cheers
Mez

Hi, welcome to BYC!!!!

For eggs, I'd suggest Rhode Island Reds, Black Austrolorps, and Sex links. I've never had the latter two, but based off of what I've read, that's what I'd get. If you want egg-laying ducks, I suggest Khaki Cambells and Pekins.

Good luck!

Glad you joined the BYC flock. I've often heard mention of Black australorps as being great layers, sociable birds and able to tolerant extremes of heat & cold.

If you go to the "Other Backyard Poultry," forum you will find duck threads, I know the duck people can give you much better advice than I could.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. I would recommend Black Sex Links (Black Stars) which are friendly and hardy, egg laying machines. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year. If you prefer a standard breed (as Black Sex Links are hybrids and will not breed true), I would suggest Australorps which are extremely hardy in both heat and cold, calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and excellent layers of large, brown eggs. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breed or hybrid you decide to get, good luck with your flock.
