Looking at doing a few capons myself. Mentioned that to my mom and she got all excited, she's 76. Have access to all of the tools in my kit, and now I have a "looper".

What basis did you use for identifying the young cockrels? I've heard mention of short tail feathers on chicks. Also, what age cut-off do you use for caponizing?

No faint heart here, but since I don't even clip my dogs' nails (I take 'em to PetCo), I seriously doubt I could perform the procedure. I SHOULD learn how to do it.... I am really, really good at hatching out roosters.

So if I got the gender wrong would it be obvious when I got in there, or would I end up removing the ovary on a perfectly good pullet?
