Currently, mine are wood and hay. I get the occasional crack when a hen lifts up and the egg drops. What are some easy, inexpensive, effective ways to pad the bottom for a soft landing?

I use just wood shavings, and have never had a problem with cracked or damaged eggs. I have about a 3 inch layer in each nest box. Smaller shavings work better than larger ones, but I've used each type successfully (and usually use the larger shavings).

Wood shavings is the way to go its kinda like a natural memory foam. If they don't go in the nest for a few days it will lose its shape of the nest and they have to re make it
