The Black and White Jersey Giant Chickens are true to their name, as they are the largest capon table birds produced in the US. The Jersey Giant was developed in New Jersey in the 1870s by crossing several large, Asiatic breeds, to meet the demand for caponized heavy fowl. The Black Jersey Giant has yellow skin, black plumage that has a green sheen and dark brown eyes. The White Giant Jersey variety was developed from the Black Giants and is a large bird with white plumage, dark brown eyes and yellow skin.
Apparently australorps also have dark eyes, so I stand corrected.
Livestock101, that's good to know. Sometimes it can be hard to tell exactly what color the eyes are from pictures, especially if they're not close-ups. I almost got an Australorp this spring, as I am attracted to a dark eyed bird, among other things. I blame it on a lifetime of living with cocker spaniels.
Okay guys, here are some pics of the 2 different types of black chicks in my care. I am thinking I have 2 giants and 1 australorp though the size of all 3 of them are the same.
First pic is a suspect australorp, 2nd pic is what I think is a giant.
