OP. Breed selection is important. Bird in your avatar indicates that needs to be revisited. There are multiple effective approaches but they need to consider hunting methods of raptors involved and the chickens responses. I free-range many birds over many years with actual losses to hawks very low so have experience. I also like hawks.
