I have a 5 day old baby chick with a swollen leg. Started to limp today and is getting worse. Just got back from the emergency vet clinic. They didn’t know what was wrong and told me to go to a bird specialist vet. I’ll post pics.

Please, does anyone know what’s wrong with it and what I should do? Treatment?

It looks like something like a string got wrapped around the chick’s leg and it swelled as it grew; the grow so fast! But the vet said that’s not the case because you can’t see the string on the back side. There’s poop stuck around it too. Looked like a string wrapped around with poop stuck to it.

Please help! I’ll be taking it to a specialist ASAP! Hopefully tomorrow!

Poor little thing!

It's hard to see in the photos, but if you have not cleaned soaked the leg to get the poop off, that's where I would start.
After cleaning it well, then I would really look hard and see if there is a string or even hair wrapped around the leg. There have been instances where a human hair has gotten wrapped around a toe, foot/leg and that is very hard to see.
You may have to dig around with some tweezers, removing scabbing and debris to see what's causing the strangulation of the leg.

Keep us posted on how it goes.

took it to the vet today. $300 later and still don’t know much. At least I got some good quality meds for her. Vet cleaned the line around the leg and said she made a small slit to see what was inside but couldn’t tell. I guess the chick is too small. I’ll post pics and updates as she heals. Hopefully she makes a full recovery with the meds she has.

It’s doing much better! Whatever the vet did made the swelling go down by 3X as much!!!! 🎉🙂
Silver Sulfadiazine is the “magical cream” the vet told me for healing the wound and prevention of infection. Metacam for pain and damp surgical scrubs for cleaning.
Glad to hear she's doing much better!
Keep us posted.
