I am considering building my next feeder. An important feature for me is the ability to pick it up at night so that I am not feeding rodents all night long while the chickens are sleeping.

I also want to minimize the ability of chickens to scratch feed out of the trough and throw it all over the ground, again to minimize the feeding of rodents. Many of the commercial designs accomplish this by having plastic baffles in the trough part.

By keeping the handles intact on the external cowl (ok, non-technical speech translation: the bigger bucket) you should be able to easily pickup the bucket and move it indoors, or, hang it somewhere out of the way. That is a great suggestion.
