Is this a mallard?

My friend gave me this duck 2 weeks ago and he told me it was a mallard he doesn't have a green head or white ring and no Drake feather I know they molt and they loose all that but his body colors haven't changed

The one with the brown head, red breast, and gray body is a hen.

I thought females quacked this has that raspy sound like the males

That bigger one that has the snowy look is likely a Welsh Harlequin.

Then it might be a young male then which would explain the color.

Drake feathers are usually in when they can breed. My Indian Runner drake got his when he was 5 months old in August but lost it a couple months later.

He looks like he's at about the same stage of molting as my mallard boys right now...maybe just a little behind - mine have bits of green coming back in on their heads. Even when they are in eclipse plumage though, boys will have a yellow-green bill and girls will have an orange bill (sometimes with black spots). Plus, like you said, the raspy voice.

Yeah, he's definitely a little ahead of yours. I've found they molt at different rates though, even when they're the same age.

Here they are less than a month ago though...
