We've been really frustrated with our egg situation lately. We have 3 older hens (about 2 1/2 years old) that have been laying just about every day since spring. It's been awesome. Then all of a sudden 2 of the 3 have stopped laying. It's been about a week with no eggs from them. We also have 7 pullets that are on the verge of laying but we haven't found any eggs from them yet. We've been wondering what's going on (maybe a snake getting the eggs? Chickens eating eggs?). Then today I found this WEIRD looking thing in the nest box. I'm guessing its an egg shell. I (wore gloves!) and pulled it apart and it looked more like an egg shell than it does in the pic. Except for the weird soft/tissue like spot there on the side.
So is this an egg? Any guesses as to what has caused this? Is the layer of this egg sick? Just a "normal" older hen issue? One of the older hens is a Naked Neck that occasionally lays wrinkled or rubbery eggs so my guess is that she did it.
