Is this an egg?

We've been really frustrated with our egg situation lately. We have 3 older hens (about 2 1/2 years old) that have been laying just about every day since spring. It's been awesome. Then all of a sudden 2 of the 3 have stopped laying. It's been about a week with no eggs from them. We also have 7 pullets that are on the verge of laying but we haven't found any eggs from them yet. We've been wondering what's going on (maybe a snake getting the eggs? Chickens eating eggs?). Then today I found this WEIRD looking thing in the nest box. I'm guessing its an egg shell. I (wore gloves!) and pulled it apart and it looked more like an egg shell than it does in the pic. Except for the weird soft/tissue like spot there on the side.

So is this an egg? Any guesses as to what has caused this? Is the layer of this egg sick? Just a "normal" older hen issue? One of the older hens is a Naked Neck that occasionally lays wrinkled or rubbery eggs so my guess is that she did it.

it looks like it might be what they call a lash or lash egg, Sometimes they come with an egg, sometimes they are just "laid" alone. They seem to think it is part of the lining of the hens reproductive system, often seems to happen with hens that are internal laying also. Old BYC thread on them and some links with other pics.
