Hi there... Just wanted to ask some fols with more knowledge and experience about feather loss. I have an Australorp that is missing some feathers on her chest. I have no roosters (fingers crossed...the girls are only 2.5 months old) but I did notice one of the other chicks pecking at Mae (the Autsralorp). Any insight or assistance is greatly appreciated!

I should also mention that I live in Texas and we have having a rather insanely hot and unbearable summer.

Thanks!

She may be molting or going broody. Broody hens regularly pull out all their chest feathers to keep closer contact with the eggs.

ALSO- you may want to go out tonight with a flashlight and check everyone very closely for mites and lice. 'Tis the season.

Yes, always check for mites or lice, but she may be having a juvenile molt. Chicks will molt twice before they become adults. They just outgrow their feathers and have to replace them.
