Minnesota!

I have a crazy dog story from today since we were talking dogs...

About 6 months ago we were fostering a hound dog for the local humane society and eventually ended up adopting her out to a family of a resident at DWs nursing home. Today I got an email from the humane society asking if we would foster a hound dog that got brought in to a neighboring county's humane society that was full (we are their 'hound dog specialists' :) ) she was found roaming and the other rescue included a photo. The pooch looked awfully familiar and I sent it to DW. She got ahold of the family and sure enough they say she wandered off a few weeks ago! They have been desperately looking for her fearing she was lured off by coyotes (they live on a farm).
We sent them the photos to confirm and it is her! They are driving over there to pick her up now!
How amazing is that! That hound is a super sweet girl and probably got on the trail of something and got lost and just kept running.
this is fantastic, I would definitely suggest a micro chip for her. This is probably how she ended up in the pound the first time...

She was an owner surrender the first time. The lady was quite old and the pup needed eye surgery and she just couldn't afford on her pension it I guess. Her lower eye lids rolled inwards so she was always getting eye infections. The humane society paid for the surgery and we had to recoup her for several weeks. She has 2 dog siblings, a blue tick and a wiemeriner, and they all free range together when the family is home. She was there 6 months I would guess before this happened.
Hounds can be very distracted by their nose. Mine got herself lost in the cornfield this year when she got on the trail of something. Took her a good long while to come out

I just came in from watching the birds roost.

It is always interesting to see what they do. My Meaties (TOADS), 2 Creamers and the guinea, roost 6 feet off the ground. It is quite a procedure for them to get that high, it takes several attempts. One of the creamers does not go onto that roost, he goes under the topper I have on a stand and goes on a low roost under cover.

Once they get up on the roost, they jockey for position, I am not sure which position is better. Makes no sense to me.

The turkeys were even more interesting. I made them new roosts today under the bird netting. They tried them out, When JJ went onto a roost the other turkeys left. JJ decided he did not want to roost on it, but none of the rest went back onto it. They are roosting on a cement foundation the coop sits on, ( about a foot above ground level. Most went into the building Ethel and a couple small hen roost with the chickens. The rest are in the other half the coop. sitting on feeders, ICU units and the floor. 2 are roosting on the waterer outside. None of it makes any sense to me again.

My chickens are so happy to get out a couple hours a day. They spend most of that time dirt bathing. I need to make sure and put some sand in their "coop" for when they can't get out. I also need to make them a run. I haven't had a stray dog in my yard yet (that I have seen), but I have a lot of neighbors. I think free ranging them is just asking for trouble. (Which is super sad. I had really wanted a place far enough out that our biggest worry would be wild predators, not dogs.) Oh well, this place is a good fit for us in most other ways, so I'll just have to deal with penned birds. :)

What a gorgeous day. I was gone most of the day, so didn't spend a lot of time outside, but at least I was out and about in it. :)

What a glorious day. I think we were upper 60's maybe a 70. I worked all day and 1/2 hour after I was home the sun setted. I dislike daylight savings. sooo much. I made a little better chicken ramp to the roost tonight and wee Dixie was up next to the big Buckeye snuggle bunnies again even though there was no nest to share again tonight. Lol. They are buds I'm thinking. They both get picked on to a degree. But it does my heart good to see them next to each other at roost time. Ralphie I too enjoy the roosting maneuvers. The jockeying for position.

Tootsie bent his head to Fleur and she started helping him with the feather shafts on his head that he can't chew off after molting. He only asks her to do this. He Will seek her out for it. She took care of it for him and then she noted some areas of concern on his saddle area and went to tend those. He then turned toward her and started to peck the ground in his mean rooster way and she totally backed off. I guess he wanted to do those himself. Lol. He's something else.
