Muddy run?

Ok, I'm in Ohio and we're starting to see the 2 feet of snow melt this week. Unfortunately, it's make my run really muddy because the snow is built up all around it. It has an actual roof over it. Is there something I can put in the run to kind of soak up the mud? Would straw work? My husband can get pallets from work, would that work? But there is gaps in them. Any cost effective suggestions?

I was going to suggest pallets and then saw you already said it- they will be great- hang onto them for next year too! Chickens love to perch on pallets.
Another use is a shelter from aerial predators:
