my chicken has swollen eye with bubbling liquid

Have a p chuck about a month old all of a sudden like over night with a very swollen eye no seeping or discharge swollen all the way shut
Look for a peck mark in case it's a peck from another bird or an insect sting. It may be a chronic respiratory disease mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) also called CRD. If it is MG, it would make your whole flock carriers for life, and it won't be cured, but symptoms may be treated with Tylan 50 or 200 injectable given orally or as a shot into the breast muscle. There is a lot of swelling of the sinus tissue, and if you see pus in there I would try to get it out. Terramycin eye ointment may also be something you would want to use in the eye. Here are some articles to read about it:

I have a hen that started having the bubbly liquid coming from her left eye around 6 days ago. I went to local feed store and they sold me an antibiotic to apply to her eye called Terramycin. She is now on her 5th day of treatment and no noticeable improvement. The woman at the feed store told me to only apply once a day. I am at a loss as to what to do. This is what the box says. Each gram contains oxytetracycline hydrochloride equivalent to 5 mg of oxytetracycline and 10,000 units of polymyxin B sulfate. I know it is bad to under treat but also bad to over treat. I wasn't to confident in the feed stores advice. I'm also quite certain that she has diarrhea. I haven't noticed any drainage from her nostrils.

Bubbles or foam from eyes may be mycoplasma (MG) infection, or from a peck wound near the eye. MG is a chronic respiratory disease. It would be better to treat her with oral antibiotics, such as Tylan 50 injectable, given either orally or as a shot. Also, oxytetracycline (same as Terramycin) or Gallimycin can be put in the water as long as she is drinking well. Diarrhea is common with a respiratory infection. Here is a good link about respiratory diseases and symptoms, and another on MG:

I've been meaning to thank everyone for their feedback. As it turns out my hens eye problem was a peck from another hen. I caught her doing the same to other hens as well. This poor little girl with the bad eye keeps getting pecked by her though since she can't see it coming. Her eye just starts to look pretty good when the other girl decides to have a go at it again. The one doing the pecking is actually a pretty nice hen to us humans but sometimes not so nice to her fellow hens. We considered eating her but figured another hen would just take her place at the bullying.

I'm dealing with the same kind of problem with some of the chickens that we got recently. We went to a local flea market and picked up 4 chickens, 2 from one seller and 2 from another. After a couple of days we noticed that one of them was rattle in their breathing and she was sneezing. We got some tylan 50 from the store and tried to give it 1cc per day. A few days later, her eyes are swollen shut. We put her down and now the other chicken that be bought from the fella that sold us the one that we had to put down started to have a white bubbly substance coming from her eye. We have isolated that chicken since yesterday and sanitized the area for the other chickens. I'm afraid that this chicken will also have to be put down and was curious on what people would suggest other than testing and blood work. As much as I hate putting down a chicken, we don't feel that it would be cost effective to have tests run on her. She seemed a bit lethargic yesterday but she seems a little more up and moving today. Any suggestions are appreciated.

The bully eye is a sign of conjunctivitis which is comony associated with Infectious Bronchitis(IB) or Infectious Laryngotracheitis(ILT). Your best bet would be to havea necropsy done on your sickest bird, you will not get it back since it will be killed to perform the necropsy.

But immediately get them on an antibiotic like Terramycin, it is specifically formulated to treat respiratort infections. mix it 4 teasponns to 1 gallon of water, keep them cooped up with no other water source and darkness seems to help. keep them on the antibiotic for 10 days and off for 2 weeks, if it comes back retreat,

In the meantime it is best to vaccinate your entire flox except the sick birds with LT-IVAX and an IB vaccine. Do not vaccinate with both the same day, do one then wait about a week and do the other.

Good Luck,

mike
