my pet chicken reviews

Pics
I just had 7 chicks delivered from My Pet Chicken a week ago, a few days later some started to twitch so I emailed MPC and they replied that it could be an electrolyte imbalance. I stopped putting vitamins in their water and gave them fresh water and all are doing great! I really like their customer service! A friend of mine ordered from Ideal Poultry and only wanted 8 hens, they told her that they were going to ship with 3 males free of charge for the added warmth but when her box arrived it had 9 extra roosters in it. So not only did she have to feed all 17 until she knew which were roos but had to find them a home too. So I think the shipping price is worth it from MPC so you get exactly what you ordered.

I ordered 12 chicks from MPC and got my box on a Tuesday. Shipping was crazy expensive, but I had nobody else to pool my order with, and I didn't realize that other places had a small chick minimum. I had read great reviews here regarding sexing and customer service, so I gave it a shot.

There was 1 DOA, a barnevelder. I was reimbursed for the chick. The other barnevelder limped for two days, and still walks slightly slower than the others, not sure if they got trampled during shipping or if it's a genetic problem.

One welsummer died when she was 2 wks old. Not sure what happened, I found her in the brooder and everyone else has since been fine.

2 turned out to be roosters, which I rehomed today. So from 12 sexed females ordered, I am ending up with 8 females. one roo is a black copper Marans, and I only ordered two of those.

I ordered 4 darkish egg layers and 4 EE's. Now I have 3 EE pullets and 2 dark eggers. I will be getting money back for the Roos, but I have to wait til they are older. I can't say what the birds will look like as far as showing, but these area hatchery stock. The surviving birds are all vibrant and healthy, except for the gimpy barnevelder.

Wow, really? What an amazing kindness! I didn't even think I could change my order now without a huge mess (and expense like another company I dealt with last year) so I never bothered to check. I just looked at what is still available for my date (5/2) and would like to switch 3 silver laced wyandotte female chicks for 3 speckled sussex female chicks, all still vaccinated of course. How do I go about this?

Just call in tomorrow during business hours and let them know you would like to swap those chicks out. If you will send me a PM with your order number I'll make a note on the account so you aren't charged.

Thank you,
Alex

I'm a little confused and hope that someone from MY Pet Chicken can clear this up or anyone who knows. Is My Pet Chicken a actual "hatchery" or just a "middle man" for some hatcheries, Meyer being one? I thought I'd ask because I'm confused. The talk of new colors and breeds make me think it IS a hatchery but I've heard it's NOT a hatchery from several different people. hoping someone can clear that up for me. if they ARE a middle man for the hatcheries I'm not sure I understand. besides smaller order quality what makes them different if they are reselling hatchery stock?? I appreciate your answers. I just want to understand a bit better.

I'm no expert, but I believe they are in fact a "middle man" as you say. I think they use 2 different hatcheries, as far as I've read. I think they work with the hatcheries to make new hybrid chickens and whatnot, that's why you hear talk of new colors and breeds.

Besides the lower order minimum, they seem to have some employees who are exceptionally talented at sexing chicks.

These are just my observations, I could be wrong about anything I've said, lol!

Anyway, hope that helps a little until someone who knows for sure comes along!

I'm happy to clear this up. My Pet Chicken does have a close working relationship with Meyer Hatchery. Please note, however, My Pet Chicken is not simply a middle-man; we have direct control over our breeding programs and are able to offer exclusive, brand new breeds and varieties. My Pet Chicken works closely with a breed specialist to help improve future generations and ensure our customers are receiving the best and healthiest stock possible.

My Pet Chicken has also partnered with two fantastic breeders who are providing good quality, fertile, exciting breeds for hatching eggs!
Additionally, our customer service department is staffed exclusively by chicken enthusiasts who have their own flocks. Rest assured, they'll be uniquely qualified to understand your concerns and properly advise you, no matter the question.

Please let me know if you have anymore questions.

@MyPetChicken Darn USPS my eggs prob won't arrive until Monday or Tuesday they were shipped on the 26th.
From OH they have gone to CA. Now I guess now on their way to Texas.so being they were shipped on the 26th probably collected on the 24th or earlier they will already be 8-10 days old plus shipping stressed. Then have to sit for 12 hrs prior to setting.

I bought my very first hatching eggs from MPC in march, three LF salmon faverolle eggs. They came very much within the time frame given, they were individually bubble wrapped and cushioned in a North Carolina newspaper "only one state away" so lucky me! Upon unwrapping I was giddy to find out I was sent four eggs instead of three, after reading the horror stories of mail order eggs I was beyond happy to get an extra chance. The eggs themselves were very lovely no cracks I had two darker eggs and one very light egg I also got one of those really oblong eggs "had to candle to put it in the bator right end up it was just that oblong."Eggs were clean, smaller than I thought they would be but I've never seen a fav egg in my life so what do I know? 21 days later the oblong egg hatches then one of the darker eggs. The next day the pale egg hatched. The last dark egg was left in the bator a few more days then checked it had stopped developing quite early on.So three out of four eggs were winners and I ended up with two hens and a roo, BTW old wives tale about oblong eggs being roos is busted, oblong egg was a hen. So far the chicks are gorgeous not funky colored, good toes, good minds! Only thing the oblong egg hen has no beard or cheeks guess that skinny egg streamlined her, doesn't matter to me she is perfect and aerodynamic.
