Nest box size

Mine are 12 by 12 by 12 for a large dual purpose breed. They seem to like them

You could go a little smaller and save on cost of materials if you care to.

Sounds like good round numbers! For good round chickens! LOL!

Seriously I'm getting ready to build my nests and have considered 12" to 14" cube. Seems like those are the measurement ranges that get tossed around a lot.

Mine are on the large side. Heck, some people use covered litter boxes, and those things are pretty big. I think it'd be a tight fit for turn-around room at 12 inches. So unless you're cramped for space, I'd go with the size you have planned.

Right size. Figure on a nest for every 4 layers. Be sure to place them lower than roost, or they will roost and crap

in the nests.

I like the smaller size, and my hens seem to also. They actually STILL have gotten 2 to a box and try to lay!! I thought it might be a little tight too, but not after seeing them in there.

There are advantages to the smaller size you have according to the two articles I posted above.
