Right now they're in a cardboard box in our shed. We have a light over them at night. Right now the temp is 86deg with no light. Is that too warm?
I'm comfortable with 86, although conventional wisdom says 100 for the first week and drop 5 degrees each week. I've watched plenty of mama hens raise chicks and they do not stick to the guidelines.
Just check frequently to make sure they don't have pasty butt. You'll know because it is a mess on the butt and prevents them from pooping. It generally means they are stressed and that the temperature may be too hot or too cold.
If you have any rodents or other creatures around (even tiny mice) you'll need a more secure brooder. Rodents can and will kill them.
Good luck with your new flock!
