New to Chicks

I am on day three with my chicks and I can get the temp right! I have 10 in a large tote and will probably divide between two tomorrow. I'm using a 250watt bulb . They don't seem to be huddling nor trying to escape but the temp was just reading about 100

My personal experience is that as long as your chicks are comfortable, there's no need to stress over it. The point is to keep them warm enough because they cannot regulate their own temperature yet, so as long as they aren't huddled together or sprawling out, you're probably doing just fine.

Are you brooding inside a home? If so, the wattage on that bulb may be too much. You do want a spot for them to run and get warm, but you also want enough of a temperature gradient so that the opposite side of the brooder is at least 20 degrees cooler.

That being said, I have never pulled out a thermometer...instead I watch the chicks and let them tell me "too hot" and "too cold".
