Hi! I am very excited to have found this site! No chickens yet, we are getting 2 as soon as we get the coop and supplies. I am looking forward toreading everyones posts!

Thank you NorthFLAChick! We had thought we would get only 2, but the coop we are looking at holds 2-4, so its something to think about!

I have been doing a great deal of research as far as what breed, but we havent decided yet. Can you recommend any friendly, heat and cold hardy breeds? We were talking about brown eggs, but arent set on that. Also, we were looking for one that wasn't extremely broody, and didnt mind being handled.

Sorry, thats quite a list of requirements! Lol

Here's a link to an article in the Learning Center that might help you sort it out:

And I found this breed trait chart a good reference tool when I was picking birds for my flock:

Some of the breeds that first come to my mind are: Black Australorps, hybrids (like the red or black sex links), Speckled Sussex and Plymouth Rocks. I'm sure others will have more recommendations. The thing to keep in mind, is every bird is different so you'll find some individual birds in each breed that don't quite "fit" the breed traits.

Hi there and welcome to BYC

Great that you have joined us. If you have not done so yet, check out the Learning Centre - lots of great resources there, and also the Coops section as it may help you in your designing or choosing your coop. Thread searching is also a good way to research specific topics. Your state thread should put you in touch with other BYC members local to you also.

Good luck with your impending chicken adventure.
