Woohoo! I'm just a little south of you in Santa Barbara! I'm not too much more experienced than you but it looks like I have a similar set up.

I have a barred rock as well as 2 other heavier breeds and they have free run of the yard. They went on little excursions when they were younger and I supposed just got accustomed to the area. None of them have expressed any particular desire in flying over the fence to explore.

Although when you first leave them out on their own, if you have any big gaps in the fence you might want to block them, as older chicks mine would squeeze through to look around in the neighbors yard for a few minutes...

and if your chickens do fly over the fence they should be easy to catch as they are SLO chickens.
