Hi y'all,

Sorry for the late introduction, but my family is living in limbo until we close on our house in a few weeks. It's been tough! I've been using this time to research and try to plan out my leap into backyard chickens, now that we can have them. Self sustainability is the goal for my family. :)
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I am a super newbie and still trying to decide which breeds I want to get, how many?, what kind of coop, etc.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? Zero

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? Google and my friend Sabrina

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Gardening, jewelry making, and sewing to a degree.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

So, I am married and we have 4 boys, a 12yr old Jack Russell and a 5 yr old rescued tabby cat. We are in the process of relocating from Houston TX to Crozet VA. I was a Realtor in Houston and will be now focusing on my direct sales wine business, since I will be homesteading more now that we have a few acres. Lots of work ahead but I'm excited! We will be getting chickens as soon as we can and then I plan to add at least 3 dairy goats. My hubby is questioning how goat milk will be compared to cow's milk and I just say "trust me," lol! I have been looking around BYC and learned so much already. I'm so excited to join the forum and share in my journey.

Welcome to Backyard chickens - glad your joined the flock. If you go to "where am I, where are you," in the social forum you can locate and post on your state thread.
You may even find other chicken folks in your new area .

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. You have a very good and thorough introduction.) Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. Our children and granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loved our chickens and made lap pets of the calmer and more gentle breeds. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your flock.

Hi, welcome to BYC!

I enjoyed your intro, fun to hear about your plans and I wish you lots of luck with your fresh start.

There are a lot of things to consider when choosing your flock, I thought that was a lot of fun, so many wonderful birds to choose from. Here's an article from the Learning Center that might help you narrow the possibilities down to what will work best for you:

In addition to all the chicken chat, BYC has forums for so much more (like non-poultry animals and hobbies). If you haven't seen these yet, check them out:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/22/other-pets-livestock
https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/41/hobbies

Lots of information to take in, lots of helpful members here so feel free to ask questions and make yourself at home.

Nice to have you join us!

Thank you! I have been all over BYC and I feel like a kid in a candy store. I can't tell you how many times I've looked at the thread on coops. I will make it through the 600+ photos one of these days here soon. I'm determined.

Thank you for that link to VA! I'm going to check it out. Yes, I'm on overload! I've picked up Mother Earth News mag for some additional reading as well. I'm sure experience is the best teacher, but I want to be as knowledgable as I can for my future animal's sake. Loving BYC!

You're welcome. I've been raising chickens for 50 years, and I still feel like a kid in a candy store whenever I shop for more chickens.)

With all your experience, what do you think is a good way to start? With chicks or laying hens? I'm interested in getting a leghorn rooster, because I feel the need to name him Foghorn, Cornish crosses for meat, RIRs, Austorlorpe, and Wyandottes :D
