Oil for feathers?

I was told buttermilk and silk cloth for cleaning my Longtails feathers but someone also suggested in passing oil. what oil would you suggest?

I would not put oil on their feathers. I think they amount of dirt/dust that the oiled feathers pick up would completely negate the desired effect.
