Oxine and Marek's

Very sorry to hear about your birdies.

The problem with trying to fight Marek's is that it's literally EVERYWHERE. It's at the feed store, it's at the county fair, it's probably at Wally World, it's anywhere anyone has ever been who has chickens.

There are two basic things you can do about Marek's:

1) Breed for resistance and live with the losses (which is very hard to do, I know) or
2) Vaccinate against it.

Vaccinating isn't cheap, but it's not hard to learn to do, and worth it as far as I am concerned. You can get the vaccine from places like First State Vet, and the syringes too. You have to keep it in the fridge, and the first time it seems like you'll never get the hang of it, but it gets much easier as you go on.

Again, very sorry to hear of your losses, hope things get better for you soon.

That is for the ACTIVATED product

Yep, it sure is.

I figured people can read that themselves.

Actually I find it unclear and I wonder if people realize the very real differences between the two forms (efficacy)... only thing I can find on the NON activated form of their product is on the technical sheet which also deals with the activated form except that it does mention in one place that the NONactivated form is a bacteriostat whereas the activated form is a disinfectant
The articles by K. Theodore speak very specifically of only using the nONactivated form and not using the activated product (for very good reason as you may not use that around live birds and must use special respiratory equipment) and as a bacteriostat (not bacteriocide) then why are people posting that it is going to kill all these viruses and such (which a bacteriostat will not do)????

You know, Diana, I've seen at least two articles by people saying it will - but like you, I didn't find anything as clear as your Virkon list at all for it. And I thought "so what do they know, and where did they find that information" because I didn't see anything that listed the specific virus or the common name for it for Oxine. Yet.

As I said before, that's the one I'd recommend as it's pretty clearly stated - in black and white. And in your case, in bold.

Of course really this is all theoretical. One could soak the ground "til kingdom come" with all manner of chemical, and then dander could blow over from a different part of the yard and it's be in the yard again. Or there could be a bird that has it within and hasn't shown symptoms. Etc, etc. It's all quite frustrating.

That is why the governments go with virkonS for disasters (that is how I found out about it > from the birdflu outbreak here in holland > I had to contact DuPont to find out how to order it as they really dont bother marketing it for the hobbyist here) There is no one magic bullet sanitizer for all situations though (Please note I am speaking of products where you are NOT recquired to de-populate and use respirators and special equipment to use it such as the AcTIVATED form of Oxine) and concerning dirt, ... well I dont think there is really anything to truly sanitize dirt in a field situation except removal and burning.

I contacted (internet) Bio-cide International and found it unusual that they have not answered my enquiry... I searched their site and the internet for the type of efficacy studies I find at the Virkon S (DuPont/Antec site) but outside the one vague efficacy statement and technical paper found zilch.
I have posted the question to the relevant EPA experts and hopefully will get a definitive answer to post here at the group.

I’m hearing a lot about virkon, and I have confirmed Mareks in my flock. Does anyone know if you have to remove the birds from the area that you are treating??
