The pecking order is something that the birds in a flock set up to determine who is the boss. The bird at the top of the pecking order is the one who gets to eat first, gets to drink first, etc. The bird on the bottom of the pecking order is typically the one who gets bullied and pecked by the rest and is thr last to eat, drink, etc. It's called a pecking order

It is not iron clad, it is a bit fluid. I tend to think if you are rather unsure of the pecking order, it is a good sign your flock is in harmony.

Realized I got cut off! It's called a pecking order because they literally "peck" each other, or, fight for the position of head which usually means the first to back down after a peck gets pushed lower and lower on the order.
