this is Pikelet she is a currently 9 months old, english springer spaniel. she has not been diagnosed by a vet yet but I am 99% sure she has hyperkinesis (dog adhd)

I am starting this thread to keep track of her symptoms , etc and because hyperkinesis is extremely rare in dogs. There isn’t much information on it, so I thought people might find it interesting!

we have had Pikelet since she was 10 weeks old.when we got her she was hyper but that was too be expected for the breed, we socialised her a lot from in a backpack before she was fully vaccinated

symptoms/behaviour problems

-recently we realised at some point she stopped sleeping during the day, her not sleeping has been going on for months!

-I have been unable to train her since she was 10 weeks old. She can’t walk on a leash, she can sit, lay down and stand for a few seconds before moving/fidgeting but thats after months of training and its still difficult for her, the smallest distraction will make her jump or start running

-she randomly takes off to run around the edge of our 3 acre field. She will ignore me calling at best she might run close or past me But the weird thing is I can recall her off birds, she never leaves the field even though she could and she does come back after she has run around enough 😅

-she is eating more then I would expect a dog of her size to. She is eating 600g of raw food my 35kg dog is eating 500kg 😅. She has had defined muscles even as a young puppy, not sure when they appeared but it wasn’t long after we got her

- she will be randomly nervous of things then completely fine with similar things ie scared of one noise and not of another. She is scared of people at the same time she seems to like them? She has been randomly scared of us even if we aren’t doing anything abnormal

- house training has been a struggle, she fogets to actually go outside then comes in side and suddenly needs to. She will continue walking while going to the toilet if she can and starts running as soon as she can

-I have never seen her calm unless crated no matter how much or how little exercise she gets. I am not even sure how calm or relaxed she even is in her crate

-she constantly has to be doing something, pacing, running, sniffing, chewing, bouncing

-she looses interest in things quickly. For instance I gave her a puzzle toy with treats in, she would interact with it for a few seconds, go look at something else, find a toy to pick up, then go back to the puzzle for a few seconds, repeat. She has even lost interest in the middle of chasing a bird

thats everything I can think of for the moment 🥲 if you are wondering how I got the pictures, she is staring at a treat plus lots of patience and blurry pictures

Information on hyperkinesis

its extremely rare for a dog to have hyperkinesis, most dogs that people think have it are just under-stimulated, bored and are being a normal puppy

symptoms are
  • Seldom sit or lie for more than a few seconds.
  • Increased resting respiratory rate.
  • Increased resting heart rate.
  • Poor response to obedience training.
  • Excessive vocalization.
  • Tendency to jump up excessively.
  • Poor response to habituation.
  • Extreme sensitivity to sound and stimuli
  • Limited attention span.
  • Aggression associated with high arousal.
  • Excessive salivation

as well they found dogs with hyperkinesis would show behaviour that would contradict each other *

*I am wondering if this is Pikelet‘s sudden nervousness then fine another time

she randomly takes off to run around the edge of our 3 acre field.
Zoomies.
Does she play with your other dog?
She is eating 600g of raw food my 35kg dog is eating 500kg
How much does she weigh now?
I have a min pin that JUST came off eating at 5% her body weight in raw whereas my Doberman eats 2.85% to maintain her 70# body. The min pin weighs 10.2#. She eats like a pig.
she will be randomly nervous of things then completely fine with similar things ie scared of one noise and not of another.
She's still young and figuring things out. My min pin is just shy of 15 months and still figuring out what to be brave about and what to be concerned about.
she fogets to actually go outside then comes in side and suddenly needs to
She didn't forget. She didn't go out to potty. She went out to fart around. My min pin does that ALL THE TIME! I have to go out with her on her remote collar and tell her over and over again "go potty" with little buzzes on the collar when I see her farting around or thinking about farting around.
I have never seen her calm unless crated no matter how much or how little exercise she gets
How much exercise does she get?
My min pin (and Doberman) require a minimum of 45 minutes of free running through fields and wooded trails daily. I try to give them an hour.
she constantly has to be doing something, pacing, running, sniffing, chewing, bouncing
Is she from working hunting lines? It sounds like she needs a job. You might want to consider getting her into retriever training and field work. She would probably excel at that.

never ending zoomies 😆

GSD puppy will have zoomies when let into the rooms she isn’t normally but when she goes into her crate she sleeps!

Does she play with your other dog?
kind of, it soon turns into her running around the area with a toy and them chasing her. She will go on for 30 minutes without slowing down, the other dogs start slowing down after 10 minutes

How much does she weigh now?
around 15kg last time she was weighed
She's still young and figuring things out. My min pin is just shy of 15 months and still figuring out what to be brave about and what to be concerned about.
My other dogs get scared of things and have went through fear periods. Pikelet behaviour feels very different

she will suddenly go in the middle of running, no thinking about it

How much exercise does she get?
I haven’t kept very good track but she has had plenty of days with 40+ minutes running and training sessions as well. I have taken her out for 30minutes of running and playing with a frisbee, I stopped at 30 minutes because I was worried about her health. She still did not sleep afterwards, they closest was her collapsing on the floor for 7 minutes, still tense with her eyes open. When I moved she got up and continued her running

yes, she can not do any work because its not possible to train her. I have tried to do a lot with her but after months of training she can’t do anything

so far I have been very successful with getting high energy/ drive dogs to lay down calmly. Fanta (working line giant schnauzer cross lab 18month) is a extremely excitable dog she struggles to stop going when she starts, she can settle all most anywhere now. Which I thought might be her personality but then I know have Pepsi (working line GSD currently 21 weeks old) who is starting to do the same as Fanta. Pikelet at 9 months old can sit on a mat, fidgeting, inside the house, with no distractions for less then 1 minute before getting up

Are you able to post the videos here for others to see?

I have recently managed to get videos of her trying to settle which I will post soon as well. Seems like two 10-20 minute runs around the field is “helping“, any longer then 20 minutes (sometimes less) and she starts getting extremely frantic and frustrated. she still doesn’t stop and can’t concentrate but she is less frustrated and tense, which makes sense because exercise does help adhd. But it is just a not very good band-aid
