We have a couple hens that have been sitting on eggs for 3 weeks now. Some of the other hens lay their eggs in the same box as the broody hens boxes and I don't know which are fresh, and which are close to hatching. My PLAN is, to get out there tomorrow and mark the eggs, but until then, here is my problem:

My love thinks if he floats the eggs, he can tell which ones are good and which ones are not. I am not buying that. If we float the eggs, will it prove which eggs are edible and not close to hatching????

No. Floating eggs is how you tell if they're old and spoiled. You can also put an egg in water when it's in late incubation and see if it moves, to check if the chick is alive. He may be getting those two things mixed up.

To tell which ones are full of baby chick, just candle them. If you see nothing, that's food. If you see that the egg is full of something, that's a baby chick. Technically still edible but probably not what you want.
