So my silkie mix Tweetie has been acting kinda strange lately. Normally, when i open the door to the coop, both of my chickens come running out to eat some of my yummy lawn. Well today and yesterday, only on chicken came running out. Tweetie has just been sitting up on the roost, really puffed up, with tail feathers really spread out and pointing outwards. I havent really seen her been eating, and she olny seems to come down to lay an egg. Also, her crop feels kinda like a squishy ball. She is my skiddish chicken, and never has let me touch her, but when she's up on her roost, all puffed up, she seems to not really care whether i touch her or not.

What do you think is wrong with her????

Could she just be going broody(she six months old), could it be a crop problem????

Please help us....

Sorry Tweetie isn't feeling well.

I am not very experienced with the medical stuff. Hopefully someone else will be along to help.

It does not sound like broody. Sounds more like the common "I have a lethargic puffed up chicken, what do I do?" Seems like it is posted a lot and there is never a great answer. I'll post a couple links. I would first bring her inside. Keep her warm. I would choose to do anything rather than nothing if she is sick. So I would give her Vitamins & Electrolites, anything she would eat, treats etc. I would probably try anti-biotics also. If she won't eat or drink I'd give her sugar water for fluids and strength. Good luck

Does her squishy crop smell bad if you sniff her open mouth? I would be concerned over sour crop if it does. If it does smell search sour crop and you'll find lots of ways to help.

If she were broody I would think she'd be in the nest or at least would be off the roost. Then again I don't have chickens yet!

Could she be egg bound?? Does she appear to be trying to "pass" something with her tail down?
