Hi!

My very first prolapse with my chicken. Noticed one day after being away for 5 days, that my otherwise always healthy chicken Oopsie has a dirty bum. Grabbed her guessing she has worms but had a nasty prolapse covered in something. I thought it was poop but now im not sure.
I decided to use iodine solution for mucuous membranes for a soak and read inline about haemorrhoid cream which i put on afterwards, adter the first time i saw a little bit of the edges lifting after the soaking that i then gently and slowly cut off. Third day today and i got half of it off now. It is pretty attached to the inside of the vent. It doesn’t look like poop at all. Mostly whiteish but with pink hues and some brownish coloring. She was very strained with pooping when i first noticed her, only tiny poops and now i have only been giving her some corn and probiotic yoghurt, she poops tiny green poops but its very hard for her. She strains so much she pushes more of her insides out every time ( which then pops back in) and makes this painful grunting sound.
She constantly leaks urates from there non stop. Every few seconds. But also poops out clear yelly like mucous. Thought it was gleet but zero bad smell. Usual faint chicken poop smell.
Im adding a picture if first day and second day and then how much i got off today and what the tissue looks like. (It actually looks like tissue in some parts (pinkish and brownish hued) and some parts just look like dried urates.) theres also clear blobs of jelly like mucous on that tissue paper. (Brown fluid is iodine solution)
Could it be a yeast type infection? Whatever it is, what would cause it? Typically a skinny calm chicken. Has not been laying for over 2 weeks as well. But neither have my other chickens for a little while now too for some reason … very odd

I would not cut anything yet, you might be cutting tissue. Just get her as clean as you can, and keep the tissue moist with the hemmorhoid ointment. Protect her from the other chickens and from flies, perhaps in a crate? But in sight of the flock if possible. Let me call some who can help you more.

I just nursed one back to complete health, it took a little over 3 weeks. Cutting some of the more soiled feathers away from the vent, nightly soaks in epsom salts, and alternating between vagisil cream and preparation H. I also was seeing some darker tissue and as long as you keep that moist (at the end I used coconut oil), I believe it will heal. After very thorough cleaning, I did gently try to press the vent back in. It did not stay until almost 3 weeks. Also be sure that you are keeping an eye on her when she is trying to lay her first egg after this. My hen had 2 that I needed to help out of the extended vent, but after that, she was fine. It has been about 3 months since her episode and has not had any other problems with prolapsing. Not a fun thing for sure, but I have hope that yours can be helped also!

Hi thank you very much.
Only reason i cut it is because it keeps coming loose from the edges more every day like very thick peeling skin. i have a light that i use to see through the loose tissue or whatever it is and i see where there is live red tissue which i do not touch at all. She is indeed in a cage right now, most of the day i keep her in the dark to make sure she won’t lay eggs and i only feed her a little bit. But has water.
I added a few photos to show how it comes loose.

I appreciate it!

I mean, I really can't see what you're seeing, so you must do as you think best. As long as you are not causing it to bleed, I guess. :idunno

You are dealing with an egg issue. This is what is blocking her and causing her to strain and prolapse. Until the obstruction clears, the prolapse will persist. Please read through my tutorial on prolapse. https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...ng-from-vent-prolapse-oh-my-what-to-do.76124/

First thing to do is give her a calcium tablet. This will encourage contractions to help her expel any egg, egg material, or tissue that may have broken away from the oviduct and refuses to come out.

I would also cut the dirty feathers away below her vent, I think. That messiness might burn her skin.
Ive cleaned her the previous day and it just turns out the same way the next day. J have trimmed some feathers already but Previously with a chicken i have trimmed away the feathers and then it just runs down along her belly and crusts on the skin. The feathers here actually keep it away from her skin so i decided to leave them on for now.

In the pictures, first picture you see less of the red skin, bottom picture you see more of the red skin. Im holding the piece away with tweezers that has just come detached from the skin and underneath there is normal red skin.

Thank you very much! I will try that asap
