Question about chickens that stop laying

I know that when chickens get older they stop laying. I don't care about the eggs or anything, I am a long way from it. my chicks are only 2 weeks right now. I am fine with havine non egg producing chickens for pets. I read that if they stop laying the others might eat it??? What the heck. Why would they do this? If my chickens ever stop laying should I remove them or something? Is this even true?
