Question about nest boxes

we use plastic milk crates, there are several in coop , most of the chickens fight over one of the boxs . i have seen 4 chickens in or trying to get in the one milk crate. didnt have a camera with me at the time or would have tryed to get a picture of that

Oh, by the way, my comment about an enclosed milk crate needing to be in a taller box: I cut most of the front out of the milk crates, leaving a ledge there. They seem to work best that way, even when not in an enclosed area.

The size is just a recommendation. I think that the lip is very important as I have a hen who really doesn't like eggs in the nest and without it I am afraid I would have eggs on the floor. It is all trial and error really.

How high should the first row or bottom row of boxes be from the ground Im guessing around 18 inches but just want to confirm.
