CrayCrayChicken
Hatching
Hi there! I've had chickens for about three years now and early today at 3am another raccoon attacked my chickens. It tried to get into their pen and in doing so the gate fell down on my hens (Sapphire) neck/head. (The cage they were in was a black dog's cage with the one big door that opens to the side) My mom and I were still awake and we happened to hear the comotion and when we went out there, we thought Sapphire was dead, but she wasn't. I got her and brought her in the garage and wraped her up in a towel and put her in a little box. Thinking she wasn't going to make it.
While she she was in the box my mom and I went scouting for the raccoon and to check on the other cages and coops. It was still on the property so we scared it off. We know it'll eventually come back again since this is the second attack, so we're making the necessary preparations. Anyways, When I came back to check on her, I touched her and she jumped up and tried to run! I quickly grabbed her and calmed her down and brought her in the house in a warmer box with grass hay. I then cut away some feathers and treated her wounds with neosporin. And 13 hours later she is still hanging on!! I've managed to get some water in her with a 3ml eyedropper but no food. However, she is missing skin on the back of her neck from when the cage fell on her and I don't know what to do! Do I cut away the remaining feathers from her neck and bandage it? Or do I just keep applying neosporin and keep the area clean? Please help! My family and I can't afford to take her to the vet..
