I had a veterinary student test a research raccoon's intelligence by putting food in a box secured by various contraptions. The carabeener was opened in under thirty seconds. Side bolts were just a useless. Snaps were slightly more challenging. Interesting side note is the coon is adept at using its teeth to tear wire apart. It even could manipulate hardware cloth if the wire had a hole large enough to get his lower jaw through.
One month later the student tested the same raccoon again, and he remembered every contraption and opened all of them with ease. Six months later and he was just as accurate. Not only are coons smart they have a good memory.
