I like glue traps for mice but they would not hold these rats - they are big.   My husband doesn't like cats /img/smilies/sad.png

You would be surprised but you have to buy the bigger rat ones. We've even caught two on one trap so they do work. I just can't handle the finish them off bit though so that's hubby's dept.

Most animals can't eat enough chocolate to do themselves harm

Don't pay too much attention to many of the "toxic food" stories unless you get ALL the details

Even your own source said it won't work with rats BECAUSE they react like humans:

Remove the feed source and you will see a reduction in rodent population. Bottom line, there is no better control.

In the mean time ger yourself repeating traps, traps that catch multiple mice, without bait if you dont like glue boards or snap traps.
