Our once "sweet" RIR hen (one year old) has developed a nasty habit. We usually take the hens a bowl of kitchen scraps once a day. When I walk into the run, the RIR flies into the air (5 feet) to get at the food. Yesterday, I went into the pen to clean up (with nothing in my hands) and she flew up and pecked my arm, taking a quarter-inch chunk out of it. Gads, it still hurts!

My husband just says to push her down, but there has got to be some stonger discipline here. She could really hurt a child. Suggestions?

Be prepared and a strong push away when they try that will stop it. My daughter had a real problem like this and lost a few chunks of skin on her arm, wrist, hand before she acted. After several knock downs, they stopped. Or if they flew up before her, they kept their distance. Just have to train them it is not acceptable.
